How to Choose a Childminder
Did you know it is a legal requirement that anyone being paid to look after someone else’s children for more than two hours per day, is registered with and inspected by the Care Inspectorate?
A childminder is someone who provides a flexible, home based childcare service. Statistics released by the Care Inspectorate have shown that childminders outshone other childcare provisions including nurseries during inspections.
If you are looking for a flexible childcare option that fits around your lifestyle and puts your child at the centre then select an SCMA childminder. Your child will benefit from a range of important developmental experiences such as socialising with other children and learning through active play outdoors all within a nurturing and safe family home environment.
Here are five top tips when choosing your childminder:
- Ensure your childminder is registered with the Care Inspectorate and has valid Public Liability Insurance. Ask to see their registration certificate and details of their insurance policy. If you think someone may be running an unregistered childminding service, contact the Care Inspectorate.
- Always sign a contract with the childminder. This means you are both aware of the terms of the service provided.
- Before signing the contract ask for a copy of the childminders policies and procedures. This should let you know how the childminder deals with risk assessments, child protection issues, discipline, infection control and other important practices.
- Take your child along for a ‘settling in’ visit before the contract begins. That way you can assess how comfortable your child is in the setting and can iron out any issues with the childminder before the contract comes into effect. All good childminders will offer a settling in period.
- You are the expert on your own child – make sure you choose a service that will cater to your child’s needs rather than settling on the service that offers the best price.
