This Unit allows the learner to reflect on their knowledge and understanding of Child Development and how they ensure children are at the centre of their practice.

As childminders advance through the Unit they will be asked to consider how they plan for progression and provide experiences for extending children’s play, learning and development in a nurturing, stimulating environment. It is strongly linked to the Curriculum for Excellence, and how to enable children in your care to develop their capacities as successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.

Unit 2: Child Development The Carer's Role aims to support childminders to:

  • Understand the Early Learning and Childcare Environment.
  • Have a knowledge and understanding of aspects that may affect the health, wellbeing and development of children in their service.
  • Observe, assess, and plan the needs of each child within their service.

When you have successfully completed this Unit, you can then go on to complete any of the other units in any order. When all six have been successfully completed you will then receive the Complete Childminding Learning Pathway, Work Based Award. This provides a total of 12 credits at SCQF Level 7.
