Accelerated Progress for Children with Speech, Language and Communicati􀀀on Needs: Using Tablet Technology

I am delighted and honoured to be presenting a workshop at the International Family Day Care Organisation Conference in Edinburgh. My workshop “Accelerated Progress for Children with Speech, Language and Communicati􀀀on Needs: Using Tablet Technology” takes place on Thursday 23rd July.

The session will give a practical overview of high impact methods which can support progress in early language development. It will explore some of the risks and concerns about the prevalence of technology in modern society particularly in relation to the development young children. However, the dominant theme will focus on the untapped value new technologies can bring and I will share ideas, examples and case studies which demonstrate the value of technology in the hands of the skilled and dedicated Early Years Practitioner.

Having previously worked a special school teacher committed to language and communication interventions, I had been a long-term techno-sceptic who had seen many expensive technologies offering flimsy solutions to serious problems. My view has now changed based on the impact of work I have done in hundreds of Early Years settings across the UK. I use technology as a tool, only when it provides the best tool for the job, and maintain all focus on learning and positive outcomes for children.

I currently work with childminders and Early Years practitioners on a weekly basis as part of a citywide project in Hull, Yorkshire. The language acceleration programme I have developed over the last 2 years “Chatta” has given me the opportunity to spend time working alongside childminders on a regular basis. One thing that strikes me is that the skill and dedication of childminders provides so much more than simply childcare isn’t always widely understood and in some quarters it goes unrecognised that childminders provide a vital layer of essential early education.

I am looking forward to learning alongside and meeting some inspirational people at the conference.I’m certain I’ve got something amazing to show you which can make a positive impact on the children you work with.
