New Commissioner for Children and Young People in Scotland

New Commissioner for Children and Young People in Scotland
The Scottish Parliament has nominated Bruce Adamson to be the new Commissioner for Children and Young People in Scotland.  Her Majesty the Queen will formally appoint Mr Adamson to the position in May 2017, who will succeed Tam Baillie.

The Commissioner’s role is to help children and young people understand their rights and to make sure those rights are respected. Their goal is for children and young people in Scotland to be as safe and happy as possible. The Commissioner’s duties include:

promote awareness and understanding of the rights of children and young people
review law, policy and practice to ensure effectiveness in respecting young people's rights
promote best practice by service providers
promote and commission research on matters relating to the rights of young people
encourage the involvement of children and young people in his work

SCMA will be saying a fond farewell to Tam Baillie, who served as the Commissioner for the past eight years, and has worked closely with the Association. Tam collaborated with SCMA to develop our Child-Led Participation Guide for Childminders last year, and always spoke candidly about his role and the progress of his work at several SCMA conferences.

Looking ahead, SCMA is looking forward to a continuing positive relationship with the Children and Young People Commissioner for Scotland and working closely with Bruce in the future.
