STEM funding secured to benefit SCMA members
SCMA has been successful in its bid to gain funding and develop learning resources, specifically for childminders to enhance their knowledge and practice surrounding STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

Science, technology and maths can sometimes have negative connotations, and we can be guilty of thinking of science as “boring” or “nerdy”.  However, the Scottish Government is keen to remove this stigma and ensure that STEM is looked upon in a positive way.

Stimulating children’s learning is something a childminder does every day, and we must be aware of STEM and encourage children to take an interest in how things work and make science and maths fun and engaging.

The Scottish Schools Education Resource Centre (SSERC) is the leading organisation supporting schools to undertake practical activities to support STEM.

In line with the aims and outcomes of the Scottish Government’s STEM Education and Training Strategy in Scotland, SSERC and SCMA will work in partnership to introduce and champion STEM within the childminding sector, with a particular focus on the early years.

Working alongside SSERC, SCMA plan to develop new Continuing Professional Learning (CPL) e-Learning programmes covering various STEM-related topics for SCMA members to access, including a series of Network Meetings taking place across Scotland to give childminders an introduction to STEM.

An activity resource pack and learning materials will be available to download from the Membership Dashboard, designed to be used with your minded children and to support and increase family learning with STEM.

In the future, SCMA also aims to work with SQA to add accreditation for the CPL e-Learning courses and include them as part of the Complete Childminding Learning Pathway - a Work Based Award, which is credit rated at SCQF Level 7.

This funding award has created an exciting learning opportunity for our 4,500 childminder members, whilst in turn introducing STEM to children and how you can create stimulating experiences for them and aid their learning and development for the future.

Look out for STEM-related ideas and activities for you and your minded children to get your teeth into, in the Craft Corner section of your winter 2018 Childminding magazine.
