Every year we ask our childminder members to take part in our Pay & Conditions Survey. Your feedback and results help us update our best practice negotiating guide for childminders.

More than 700 SCMA members took part in the survey and we’d like to thank each of you for playing your part.  Without your feedback, this information would not be available - all our figures come directly from your responses as part of our annual Pay & Conditions Survey.

The average cost of a childminder in Scotland is £4.08 per hour per child.

From our results, 43% take their payments in advance. SCMA always encourage childminders to take payments in advance to avoid non-payment of fees and to ensure parents do not accumulate debt.

Only 25% ask for a deposit to secure a childminding place. A deposit can ensure that your childminding costs are covered if parent fails to take up your space or make initial payments. Deposits are also useful when taking on a parent who is in receipt of College Childcare Payments, as delays are common and the deposit will help cover your costs until funds are received.

We were also keen to find out more about the range of childcare provision our SCMA members provide.  10% provide a Community Childminding (or similar) Service, 11% offer funded Early Learning and Childcare and 24% provide funded childcare for a parent attending college.
