Episode 3: Mixed Ages Childcare

One of the unique strengths of childminding is the opportunity for children of different ages to learn, play and grow together in a small, nurturing environment.

In the latest episode of Childminding Matters, SCMA's Quality & Learning Lead, Nyree Cooper, is joined by childminders Trish Atkinson from Aberdeenshire and Caroline Stewart from Stirling to explore the benefits—and some of the challenges—of working with mixed age groups.
Together, they share practical strategies, top tips and inspiring ideas for supporting children at different ages and stages, helping childminders make the most of the rich learning opportunities that mixed-age settings provide.

With the summer holidays underway, Trish also shares the creative "Ideas Soup Pot" she introduced in her setting. Throughout the year, children added suggestions for activities they'd like to do during the holidays, from baking and den building to nature walks. Every child had a chance to contribute, creating a fun and inclusive way to plan activities that everyone could enjoy. It's an idea that can easily be adapted for any holiday period with seasonal activities for all ages and all weathers.

You can also discover even more about Trish's "Ideas Soup Pot" and Caroline's "Choice Boxes" in Episode 3.

"When you find something that captures everyone's imagination, it's incredibly rewarding. Watching different ages learning and playing together, and celebrating their achievements together, is very enjoyable."
